GOP: let’s give multinationals billions in permanent tax breaks — and not vote on a jobs bill for the #99percent

These Teaparty shitheads are beyond the pale. From Think Progress:

[Tea Party Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT)] wants to gift multinational corporations with a permanent tax break worth tens of billions of dollars.

A slew of multinational corporations — even though they already pay exceedingly low taxes — have been pushing for the enactment of a tax repatriation holiday, which would allow them to bring money they have stashed overseas back to the U.S. at a tax rate dramatically lower than the statutory 35 percent. The corporations want a short window in which this low tax rate would apply. But Lee has decided that he would just go ahead and make the holiday permanent:

Today, Senator Mike Lee submitted legislation that would create millions of new jobs and inject $1 trillion into the American economy by significantly reducing the excessive tax on repatriated assets. Sen. Lee’s proposal would permanently lower the tax rate for businesses from 35% to 5% on money earned overseas and brought back to this country…Unlike recent repatriation “holidays,” which last a short period of time, Senator Lee’s bill would make the repatriation rate permanent.

It would create ‘millions of new jobs’? Really Mike Lee? Like all the jobs that were created in the past 10 years with Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy or after that last tax holiday granted to the multinationals?

On top of Lee’s flagrantly ridiculous proposal to enrich highly profitable multinational corporations even more (at the expense of our nation’s treasury), is THE REFUSAL by Teaparty House Leader, Little Lord Cantor (R-VA) to even allow the House TO VOTE on Obama’s Jobs Bill:

Says Obama: “Yesterday, the Republican Majority Leader in Congress, Eric Cantor, said that right now, he won’t even let the jobs bill have a vote in the House of Representatives. He won’t even give it a vote. Well I’d like Mr. Cantor to come down here to Dallas and explain what in this jobs bill he doesn’t believe in. Does he not believe in rebuilding America’s roads and bridges? Does he not believe in tax breaks for small businesses, or efforts to help veterans?” (via: liberalsarecool)

So, yea. #OccupyWallStreet because the Republican party has lost it’s goddamned mind. Tax cuts for the wealthy + spending cuts for the rest of us isn’t going to cut it anymore.

  2. If Eric Cantor is a “smug little shit” what does that make Harry Reid since he blocked a vote on the “no jobs bill” when Mitch McConnel tried to bring it up for a vote in the Senate Tuesday? Opps I guess Obama can’t even convince his own party that his “no jobs bill” will work.

    • Mitch McConnell wanted it to fail. More games. We already know every Republican senator will vote no — that’s a given, because what else do they know how to do anymore? So what if Reid didn’t want it tacked on to some other bill now? Reid wants a full debate and that’s what he’ll get. Let’s hear why Republicans think helping the unemployed GET A JOB is a bad idea when they want to cut so many taxes for the wealthy.

  3. Games? President Obama is running around the country saying “pass this bill now” over and over again so why hasn’t Reid brought it to the floor in the Senate where Dems have a majority? Let me answer that for you because despite what Obama wants Americans to think, it’s not only Republicans that don’t like his “no jobs bill” it’s his own party that doesn’t like this bill. Obama is on the Titanic right now and the Dems in the Senate know it, so their not going to rearrange the deck chairs as the band keeps playing the music as the ship goes down.

    • No one is denying Reid wants to win more Dem votes. But to say McConnell wasn’t playing games with a maneuver that hasn’t been used in 70 years is being completely dishonest. Or delusional.

      Here’s what happened: Mitch McConnell wanted to bring up the president’s jobs bill, which Harry Reid is still modifying in an effort to win more Democratic votes. He wanted to do so for a simple reason: Sans modifications, the bill would fail and the Democrats would be embarrassed.

      McConnell tried a legal but arcane maneuver to suspend the rules after cloture and force a vote. If you didn’t understand that, don’t worry, nobody understands that. It hasn’t been done since 1941. What matters, though, is what happened next.

      Reid objected. The Republicans, he said, were being “dilatory,” forcing votes just to waste the chamber’s time. The parliamentarian — the Senate’s umpire — overruled him. But rather than backing off, Reid forced a majority vote on the parliamentarian’s ruling. The vote succeeded, and the rules were changed to outlaw McConnell’s maneuver.

      This is known in the Senate as the nuclear option. It is a way to change the rules with a simple majority. It is the same procedure that Bill Frist wanted to use to end the judicial filibuster in 2005. Democrats opposed it bitterly then, and Republicans mostly supported it. Last night, Democrats used the tactic, and Republicans were left in bitter opposition.

      It was, in truth, an odd issue over which to go nuclear. Democrats didn’t change a rule in a way that will substantially benefit them or hurt the minority in the coming months. This was, as the Republicans pointed out, the first time either party had even attempted a post-cloture rule suspension this year. Rather, Democrats changed a rule because the Republicans were annoying them.

  4. What procedures were taken is not the matter here at all. The games being played are by President Obama, he is galavanting across the country telling the American people that its Republicans holding this bill up when in reality, he can’t get it passed by his own party. He is telling Republicans to pass the bill the way it is, all or nothing yet Reid is changing the bill just so it can get through the senate. So why is President Obama out their telling bald face lies everytime there’s a microphone in front of him?

  5. President Obama’s “bill” isn’t a bill. To be a bill, a member of the House has to take what the President sent and enter it into the House. Since Republicans no that it is another “stimulus” bill, not a jobs bill, another “shovel-ready” Democrat vote-buying bill, why would any of them enter it. The question UTMB should be asking — but won’t — is why no Democrat sponsored it.

    President Obama whined and whined, demanded and demanded that the Senate vote on the bill. There was no Senate bill. No-nil-nada-zero-zip-zilch Democrat entered and sponsored the bil, not even Majority Leader Reid, and he wasn’t about to. That’s when McConnell had fun with this hoax.

    So now we have Reid blaming Republicans for not wanting to debate and the President blaming Republicans for not voting on it. The sham isn’t just translucent; it’s transparent.

    I would really like to hear the logic behind the comment you left here. I don’t understand Liberals in general and how they come to some of the irrational responses they make politically, but you my friend are on a level all your own. So please explain how you came to the conclusion that the Republican next step is to “start bombing
    american states whom in revolt” and by the way which states are in revolt? Maybe you’re talking about the 26 states that have filed lawsuits against the “Affordable Health Care Act”, but I have a feeling that’s not what you’re talking about.
