Before you take anything John McCain says seriously ever again, you must consider this:

What’s Juan McCain’s newest hysterically partisan scare tactic? Automatic military cuts will “literally” lead to an “inability to defend the nation!!”

“Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have been at the forefront in trying to scare the public into thinking the automatic military spending cuts set to take effect in January will decimate the military (they won’t).

“But the two Republican senators took their hysteria to a whole new level in an interview published today on the Newsmax website. In the 12 minute-long segment full of outright paranoia and alarmist distortions, McCain said the defense sequester would “literally” — literally — prevent the United States from defending itself…”

Or as Charles P. Pierce describes it:

“…it appears that we’re going to have a fight now over the defense cuts that were part of the deal that was cut last year in order to arrange for the Congress to do what it used to do in its sleep — namely, raise the debt ceiling. There is no more reliably slippery operator in Washington than Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina… Huckleberry’s solution? The president should call in John McCain, who, as we know, actually won the 2008 presidential election because of his superior bipartisan ideas and his essential maverickosity. Help us, Obi-Wan Grandpa. You’re our only hope. This is, of course, all bollocks…”
