Factory farming and cruelty for profit

Mark Bittman – NY Times: “Sysco is the latest food giant—it’s the largest food distributor in the country—to come out against gestation crate confinement of pigs. The National Pork Producers Council’s communications director was quoted in the National Journal saying: “So our animals can’t turn around for the 2.5 years that they are in the stalls producing piglets…I don’t know who asked the sow if she wanted to turn around.”

“Really.”

    • I am not a vegan but do think livestock should and can be treated humanely – from birth to slaughter. Factory farming negates humane treatment, since the bottom line will always be profit. Maybe the only way to ever make it right will be growing meat in a lab for consumption or going back to smaller farms that aren’t corporate owned.

Have you ever seen the documentary Food, Inc or the movie Fast Food Nation? Both are very thought-provoking.
