Good Catholic, Christian behavior: rejecting Walmart’s “blood money”

We feel that even though Walmart has low prices, they pay lousy wages, they’re anti-union and they have a detrimental effect on the survival of small businesses,” Brian Flagg, who runs the Casa Maria Free Kitchen in Tucson, told The Arizona Daily Star. “We consider that blood money.” Flagg said it wasn’t just him making that decision, either. After consulting the charity’s board, they decided it was only appropriate they turn down the money, a first for the group. “The consensus was not to accept the money,” he reportedly added. “Hopefully we’re modeling good Catholic, Christian behavior.” — Catholic charity shuns Walmart’s ‘blood money’

Critics often cite Walmart for having a detrimental effect on the small business community in areas where it sets up new stores, which often employ workers for minimum wage, offering little in the way of benefits. The retailer has even been caught actively helping employees sign up for food stamps (PDF), much of which is returned to Walmart through actual food purchases.

Workers also say they are often overlooked for raises and paid minimal amounts for long hours — a key reason the famously anti-union retailer was being targeted on Black Friday by organized strikes in nine states.

The Tax Returns: If Mitt Romney were being treated like Pres. Obama and other Democrats

How tough is it for Mitt Romney to have to “deal with” Harry Reid’s accusations that a Bain Capital insider told him Mitt hasn’t paid federal taxes for 10 years?

It’s NOTHING compared to what Democrats have had to deal with.

BooMan nails it:

Mitt Romney isn’t really a Mormon. He’s an atheist who only went along with his father’s faith so he could duck the Vietnam draft. He didn’t actually try to convert anyone when he was in France either. In reality, he spent all his time in Monte Carlo gambling and buying high-end hookers. When his daddy found out what he was doing, he made him come home and marry his high school sweetheart. Actually, he only made him marry her after the second time she got pregnant. The first time, they got an abortion. Then Romney started using some of the mafia connections he had made in Marseilles to import heroin. By the time he became governor, they were flying it straight into a secret airport they set up in the Berkshires. When one of the pilots started to talk, Romney had him killed.

Wait for it….

Now, if we started telling these stories to people, and a substantial percentage of the population started to actually believe these stories, and if congressmen humored and even encouraged the people who believed these stories, and if media figures talked about these stories, and if Congress actually had hearings about some of these stories, then Mitt Romney would know what it’s like to be treated like a Democrat.

Also, too from Steve M:

Poor Mitt. Logic tells us that Reid couldn’t possibly have heard this from multiple sources, so he’s just blowing smoke. And yet, even if it’s a lie, Reid’s put Romney on the spot, because what he’s saying sounds plausible to a lot of people.

Y’know, it’s a bit like saying that the current president is a secret Muslim socialist who lied about his U.S. birth and has a fake Social Security number and is secretly plotting to take away all privately owned guns if he’s reelected, either before or after he finishes the job of deliberately destroying American capitalism. It’s also a bit like saying that the previous Democratic president was a drug dealing serial murderer and rapist whose lesbian wife had her male lover killed when she wasn’t hanging sex toys on the White House Christmas tree.

It’s almost like that. The difference is that Romney’s not facing an ever-expanding list of accusations, most of them truly grotesque and preposterous, many of them of a felonious or treasonous nature, spread by multiple prominent rumormongers over the course of years, and believed in every particular by roughly a third of the country…

Romney says Reid is lying. To make this ONE accusation disappear, all Mittens has to do is release his returns and *poof* problemo no mas. Right?

Romney’s Gafftastic “World” Tour: Onward to Israel!

Daily Kos: An example of Mitt Romney’s “honesty:”

  • Mitt Romney on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu: We can almost speak in shorthand. We share common experiences and have a perspective and underpinning which is similar.
  • Mitt Romney on how he’d handle Iran: I’d get on the phone to my friend Bibi Netanyahu and say, ‘Would it help if I said this? What would you like me to do?’
  • Mitt Romney on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu: Israel’s current prime minister is not just a friend, he’s an old friend.
  • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Mitt Romney: I remember him [Romney] for sure, but I don’t think we had any particular connections, I knew him and he knew me, I suppose.

“I SUPPOSE,” Bibi shrugged, barely concealing his disdain. heh.

Kevin Drum ponders why Bibi so casually tossed Romney under the bus: “What’s interesting here isn’t that Romney appears to have exaggerated his relationship with Netanyahu. That’s a political misdemeanor. What’s interesting is that Netanyahu seems to be thoroughly uninterested in backing up Romney even a little bit. Mitt Romney? Yeah, I guess I’d recognize him if we passed on the street. He’s the one with the good hair, right? At the same time, he insists that his relationship with Obama is better than we think. This is probably just normal politics — why diss the American president in public, after all? — but it’s still an interesting juxtaposition.”

What can Romney do to earn Bibi’s favor? Maybe try going Full Metal Zionist?

TPM: World War End Times: “The Romney campaign had at time of writing on Friday sent out two separate e-mail press releases chiding the Obama administration for its “refusal to say whether Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.” [...] I suppose it’s possible the Romney campaign is so unaware of the realities of the Middle East peace process, however moribund it may be, that they’re unconcerned with just how inflammatory an American president’s expression of support for an undivided Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would be to the Arab world. But even with the stumbles Mitt Romney has made this week on the international stage, that seems unlikely. So, accepting that Romney is aware of the significance, it seems likely he’s prepared to signal a very real, very controversial departure from decades of U.S. peacemaking policy, and put the weight of his potential presidency behind a declaration that he believes Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. That would be a very big deal.”

And here you can see Buzzfeed Politics desperately trying to stir shit up, perfectly in sync with the Romney campaign. But as Josh Marshall points out above, in 2008 after Obama said Jerusalem should be the undivided capital of Israel, “Palestinian leaders reacted with dismay [and the Obama] campaign quickly walked things back.”

Meanwhile on the Romney plane: Balloon Juice: “The campaign team shows off their superior organizational skillz.”

Maddow Blog: “Oops: “Mitt Romney is making a big push for the Jewish vote. In classic Romney (i.e., clueless) form, his campaign scheduled a trip to Israel on the Jewish fast day of Tisha B’Av.” Gershom Gorenberg added, “It seems no one on his staff checked a Jewish calendar” before scheduling his trip to Israel.”

Political Wire: “On the eve of Mitt Romney’s trip to Israel, a new Gallup poll finds 68% of Jewish Americans support President Obama for re-eelction, while 25% support Mitt Romney.”

Naturally, Buzzfeed Politics found some Jewish men in Israel who would happily judge a second Obama term based solely on Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Yep. Naturally. The President’s a secret Muslim, unless we need to bring up Rev. Wright from the 2008 playbook.

But you know what? I welcome more discussion about BOTH candidates’ religions and theological beliefs. I think we should know a little more about Mormonism and how it’s shaped the Mitt Romney we’ve come to know and shake our heads about today. Maybe Mitt’s visit to Israel is the perfect opportunity to finally open that discussion.

“Hello one percent! More power to ya!”

Sarah Palin today at a hedge fund conference in Las Vegas.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon made a shocking disclosure Thursday night that some of the company’s bets on credit markets have gone bad to the “significant” tune of $2 billion. The losses stemmed from a hedging strategy at the company’s chief investment office in London, where outsize bets by a trader named Bruno Iksil — known variably as “the London Whale” and “Voldemort” — have been roiling markets for weeks. — Daily Intel

“If you’re wondering why you should care if some idiot trader (who apparently has been making $100 million a year at Chase, a company that has been the recipient of at least $390 billion in emergency Fed loans) loses $2 billion for Jamie Dimon, here’s why: because J.P. Morgan Chase is a federally-insured depository institution that has been and will continue to be the recipient of massive amounts of public assistance. If the bank fails, someone will reach into your pocket to pay for the cleanup. So when they gamble like drunken sailors, it’s everyone’s problem.” — Matt Taibbi, Jamie’s Cryin: Dimon, J.P. (3/24) Saturday morning’s 6 potentially interesting things

1) ROMNEY: Feel the excitement!

Romney in 2002: My only connection to the GOP is I’m a registered Republican

Charles P Pierce: The Romney Replacement Bus Is at the Station – Here’s Senator Jim DeMint (R-Wingnuttia), talking about likely presidential nominee, Willard Romney and the rest of the Republican field: “I just hope at some point they’ll realize whether they can win or not. If they can’t, the best thing they can probably do is to help the one who is going to win.” Feel the fire! Here’s The Washington Post’s list of some people from whose lukewarm approval Romney would benefit in the near future. Personally, I wouldn’t hire any of them to park my car, but that’s just me. Honestly, now. Princess Dumbass Of The Northwoods? Senator Aqua Buddha of Kentucky? The zombie-eyed granny-starver? Is there anyone on that list who doesn’t make independent voters scream and run wildly for the tree line? This isn’t a party establishment. It’s the people sitting on the bench that you avoid in the bus station. And even they have to be coaxed and wheedled and pleaded with to support the only candidate in the party who, at this advanced moment on the calendar, has a chance of winning the nomination? I’m telling you, by the time Willard gets up to give his acceptance speech in Tampa, the national committee’s going to be paying people on the sidewalks outside 20 bucks to come in and cheer.

2) SANTORUM: FEAR and LOATHING on the campaign trail

Video: Rick Santorum’s Insane New Fear Mongering Ad: Welcome to OBAMAVILLE! – Taking right wing fear mongering to an insane new level, here’s Rick Santorum’s latest web advertisement. Notice at about 39 seconds in: the image of Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad flashes to President Obama for a split second.

3) NEWT! Pass the smelling salts and my blankey

Gingrich Says Robert De Niro’s ‘White First Lady’ Crack Is ‘Inexcusable’ – “What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong,” Gingrich said. WHAT DE NIRO SAID: “Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?” De Niro asked, according to a pool report from the fundraiser. The report said the crowd roared and someone yelled “No!” as De Niro asked, “Too soon, right?” Piers Morgan explains De Niro’s joke to Gingrich – “This is the whole point,” [Morgan told Gingrich]. “The whole point of De Niro’s comment, his joke, was precisely because many, many people were saying that kind of thing very seriously about Michelle Obama.”

Newt Gingrich calls Obama comment on Trayvon Martin ‘disgraceful’ - Most observers took President Obama’s comment that the killing of Trayvon Martin hit him particularly hard because “if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon” as a very normal human reaction. However, at least one person — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich — found it “disgraceful” and “appalling” that Obama was “trying to turn” the death of the African American teenager “into a racial issue.” “Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it didn’t look like him?” Gingrich asked during an appearance Friday on The Sean Hannity Radio Show. “That’s just nonsense dividing this country up,” he continued. “When things go wrong to an American, it is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling.”

Gingrich: It’s Obama’s fault people think he’s Muslim – “I have said publicly several times that I believe Obama is a Christian. He went to a Christian church for over 20 years. He was listening to the sermons. The fact is I take him at his word. But I think it is very bizarre that he is desperately concerned to apologize to Muslim religious fanatics while they are killing young Americans, while at the same time going to war against the Catholic Church and against every right-to-life Protestant organization in the country. I just think it’s a very strange value system… It should bother the president. Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask, why would they believe that? It’s not because they’re stupid. It’s because they watch the kind of things I just described to you. When you have every bishop in the Catholic Church say this administration’s at war with their religion, you don’t think that has an impact?”

Patty Murray Releases Video Urging John Boehner To Drop Birth Control Fight – Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) released a new video on Friday urging House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to abandon his plans to continue the fight in the House against contraception coverage. Minutes before Sen. Roy Blunt’s (R-Mo.) amendment, which would have allowed all employers to refuse to cover contraception for their employees for “moral reasons,” failed in the Senate on March 1, Boehner vowed to take up the fight in the House. “I think it’s important for us to win this issue,” Boehner told reporters at the time. He said the Obama administration’s new contraception rule requiring most employers to cover birth control with no co-pay for their employees violates religious liberty.

5) DOOSH Limbaugh

Media Matters Releases Radio Ads Against Rush Limbaugh (AUDIO) - Media Matters launched its campaign on Thursday, stating the company planned to spend at least $100,000 on anti-Limbaugh radio ads. The ads use audio from Limbaugh’s attack on Fluke and criticize stations that still air his program. The group called their ads “community service announcements.” Listeners are urged to call the local station that carries Limbaugh to say “we don’t talk to women like that” in our city. (see link for both ads)

Limbaugh hires a crisis management consultant – It seems he has now hired a crisis management consultant to try and stop the bleeding before Mike Huckabee comes and steals his time slot (and affiliates). Brian Glicklich has been acting on Limbaugh’s behalf since at least March 8. Glicklich is a former vice president at Premiere Radio Networks, and currently heads the firm How Handy Is That, which specializes in reputation and crisis management and “gadfly defense.” He previously worked as counsel to a firm that provides crisis management to clients like David Copperfield and Paris Hilton. Glicklich also has an extensive relationship with Glenn Beck, and is thanked in the acknowledgements of several of Beck’s books.

Utah demands federal government return public lands to state – The state of Utah, long resentful that some 60 percent of its territory belongs to the U.S. government, says the time has come to reclaim the millions of acres it gave up more than a century ago for admission to the union. Governor Gary Herbert signed into law on Friday a bill demanding the federal government relinquish ownership of roughly 30 million acres of public land in Utah by 2015 or face a state lawsuit challenging its continued control of that property. Shrugging off warnings from state attorneys that the legislation, backed primarily by Republicans, is likely unconstitutional and could lead to a protracted but futile legal battle, Herbert called such a dispute “a fight worth having.”

INSANITY: TENNESSEE: Senate Passes Bill Allowing The Teaching Of Creationism – The Tennessee Senate has approved a bill that will allow teachers to advocate for creationism and against climate change. The bill’s wording is couched in terms of “protecting the right to open discussion.” Senators voted 24-8 to pass a bill that says schoolteachers cannot be punished for “helping students to understand, analyze, critique and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories” taught in public schools. The measure has drawn strong opposition from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Center for Science Education and the American Civil Liberties Union, which said it is cover for teachers who want to teach creationism or intelligent design. Supporters said the measure would give teachers more guidance to answer students’ questions about science topics. “The idea behind this bill is that students should be encouraged to challenge current scientific thought and theory,” said state Sen. Bo Watson, R-Hixson.  ||| RELATED: U.S. students behind in math, science, analysis says – CNN – In math, U.S. high schoolers were in the bottom quarter of the countries that participated, trailing countries including Finland, China and Estonia. [...] In science, the United States falls behind countries such as Canada, Japan and the Czech Republic.

It’s all fun and games until the guy who identifies with YOU goes on a murderous rampage

Bob Cesca explains:

As early as a few minutes after the Oslo attacker was arrested by authorities, reports crawled across my twitter timeline claiming that the shooter was a tall blonde man. We now know that was indeed the case, but that did not prevent virtually the entire Reich-Wing media-sphere from spending the next several hours speculating that it must be the work of Muslim extremists.

The ironic, and distinctly Freudian, thing is that the attacker is actually a christian conservative nationalist who believes President Obama is a Marxist and that his attacks were “necessary” to defeat liberal immigration policies and stop the spread of Islam. Sound familiar?

America today: A Medal of Honor recipient and some crazy “Christian” leader’s remarks about it

First the Medal of Honor recipient’s story, because it’s a really great story, then the “Christian:”

Today, President Obama awarded Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta the Medal of Honor, making him the first living recipient of the award since the Vietnam War. The tale of how he earned this distinction should pretty much guarantee that this man never has to buy another beer in his life.  From President Obama’s remarks:

Salvatore Giunta’s time came on October 25, 2007. He was a Specialist then, just 22 years old.

Sal and his platoon were several days into a mission in the Korengal Valley — the most dangerous valley in northeast Afghanistan.  The moon was full. The light it cast was enough to travel by without using their night-vision goggles.  With heavy gear on their backs, and air support overhead, they made their way single file down a rocky ridge crest, along terrain so steep that sliding was sometimes easier than walking.

They hadn’t traveled a quarter mile before the silence was shattered.  It was an ambush, so close that the cracks of the guns and the whizz of the bullets were simultaneous.  Tracer fire hammered the ridge at hundreds of rounds per minute — “more,” Sal said later, “than the stars in the sky.”

The Apache gunships above saw it all, but couldn’t engage with the enemy so close to our soldiers.  The next platoon heard the shooting, but were too far away to join the fight in time.

And the two lead men were hit by enemy fire and knocked down instantly.  When the third was struck in the helmet and fell to the ground, Sal charged headlong into the wall of bullets to pull him to safety behind what little cover there was.  As he did, Sal was hit twice — one round slamming into his body armor, the other shattering a weapon slung across his back.

They were pinned down, and two wounded Americans still lay up ahead.  So Sal and his comrades regrouped and counterattacked.  They threw grenades, using the explosions as cover to run forward, shooting at the muzzle flashes still erupting from the trees.  Then they did it again.  And again.  Throwing grenades, charging ahead.  Finally, they reached one of their men.  He’d been shot twice in the leg, but he had kept returning fire until his gun jammed.

As another soldier tended to his wounds, Sal sprinted ahead, at every step meeting relentless enemy fire with his own.  He crested a hill alone, with no cover but the dust kicked up by the storm of bullets still biting into the ground.  There, he saw a chilling sight:  the silhouettes of two insurgents carrying the other wounded American away — who happened to be one of Sal’s best friends.  Sal never broke stride.  He leapt forward.  He took aim.  He killed one of the insurgents and wounded the other, who ran off.

Sal found his friend alive, but badly wounded.  Sal had saved him from the enemy — now he had to try to save his life.  Even as bullets impacted all around him, Sal grabbed his friend by the vest and dragged him to cover.  For nearly half an hour, Sal worked to stop the bleeding and help his friend breathe until the MEDEVAC arrived to lift the wounded from the ridge.  American gunships worked to clear the enemy from the hills.  And with the battle over, First Platoon picked up their gear and resumed their march through the valley.  They continued their mission.

It had been as intense and violent a firefight as any soldier will experience.  By the time it was finished, every member of First Platoon had shrapnel or a bullet hole in their gear.  Five were wounded.  And two gave their lives:  Sal’s friend, Sergeant Joshua C. Brennan, and the platoon medic, Specialist Hugo V. Mendoza.

Now here’s what some pathetic, resentful, Low T “Christian” clown had to say about it:

Christian Leader Says Medal Of Honor Is “Feminized” Because Recipient Didn’t Kill People

Brian Fischer, “Director of Issues Analysis” for the American Family Association, is upset that President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Sgt. Salvadore Giunta, because Giunta prevented deaths rather than caused them.

Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor winner of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, braved heavy gunfire to pull a fellow soldier to cover and rescued another who was being dragged away by insurgents.

But Fischer will have none of that, complaining:

“So the question is this: when are we going to start awarding the Medal of Honor once again for soldiers who kill people and break things so our families can sleep safely at night?

“We have feminized the Medal of Honor,” Fischer wrote.

Jesus would be so proud.  And I’m sure we’d all agree that being the “Director of Issues Analysis” for the American Family Association is SO much manlier than fighting and saving fellow soldiers in Afghanistan! ROOOOAAAR!!

I’m guessing Brian Fischer wouldn’t come close to having enough available testosterone on hand to tell Sgt. Giunta to his face that he supposedly “feminized” that medal with his heroic actions.
Here’s hoping that Fischer accidentally bumps into Giunta in a dark alley someday.

Onward Christian soldiers

“And we have yet another Republican congressional candidate this morning who sounds for all the world like someone having a psychotic break, as Texas pastor Stephen Broden says violent overthrow of the government is ‘on the table’.”

Insane GOP Candidate of the Day

Remember when Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks “insulted” George Bush and conservatives lost their minds, calling her – among other things – a traitor? The rightwing definition of patriotism and Christianity sure has evolved over the years…

New Rule: If You Know Less About Barack Obama Than Any Other President in History, You Might be a Redneck

MAHER: And finally if you know less about Barack Obama than any other president in history, you just might be a redneck. Now, I mentioned this because last week Haley Barbour who is the former head of the Republican Party, the current Governor of Mississippi and of course Boss Hoggs of the Dukes of Hazard, said about Obama “this is a president we know less about than any other president in history.”

Really? We know less about Obama than say Millard Fillmore? Oh yeah, Fillmore, we had too much information about that guy. I don’t need that picture in my head of Fillmore having telegraphed sex with Harriet Tubman.

You know this effort by the right to insist that Obama is un-knowable has culminated now in the bizarre belief that the President is secretly a Muslim.

An astounding one in five Americans believe this. And two in five believe he’s a hologram projected by a Chinese satellite. One in seven thinks he’s under their bed right now. Continued…

Montana GOP wants homosexual acts to be illegal

“We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal.” – Montana GOP, GOP platform: “Crime” section.

I wonder why the Montana GOP won’t be honest, go full-on Old Testament and add honor killings to the “Christian” section of their platform too? Religious fundamentalism is so Election 2010 for the Republican-Tea Party crowd. Just ask the attendees of the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit.
