Think Progress reports on Romney Campaign co-chair, John Sununu’s theory on why Colin Powell would support President Obama:

SUNUNU: You have to wonder whether that’s an endorsement based on issues or that he’s got a slightly different reason for President Obama.

MORGAN: What reason would that be?

SUNUNU: Well, I think that when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being President of the United States — I applaud Colin for standing with him.

For the record, John Sununu is an intelligent and accomplished white man. He has also decided to endorse Mitt Romney, who is white, over Barack Obama, who is black. No one believes that Sununu made this decision for any reason other than the fact that he prefers Romney’s policies to Obama’s, and it would be absolutely inappropriate to suggest that Sununu joined the Romney campaign because he wanted a president of his same race. Colin Powell is also an intelligent and accomplished man. Suggesting he is unable to see beyond the president’s race is no less insulting.

So what was Donald Trump’s huge, birther-related, campaign-shattering, October-surprise announcement?  If Obama will release all of his college transcripts and passport applications, Trump will contribute $5 million to the charity of Obama’s choice. The Guardian: “This is not a media event or about Donald J Trump,” [Trump] wrote – a claim that, if true, would have made it unique in his professional career. “This is about the United States of America.” Oh, but it very much was about Donald J Trump – and far from being a gamechanging revelation, the much reported revelation, when it finally came, wasn’t even a revelation. It was a two-and-three-quarter-minute YouTube video in which the mogul, sitting behind a desk and seemingly channelling the spirit of a Bond villain, offered Obama “a deal I don’t believe he can refuse.”

Mark Sanford took a break from his favorite pastime of wandering the Appalachian Trail to appear on Fox “news” and call Obama a spear chucker thrower:

“Obama’s going to come out in this case much more forcefully, and he’s going to throw a lot of spears,” Sanford opined. “And I think it’s very, very important that in this case that, you know, Romney stay focused on his vision for the country and stay focused on the things that, I think, matter most to people in this country, which is, where is the economy going, where are we with jobs, and what’s happening next on the debt and the deficit issue?”

At this point, I’m only surprised that everyone on Fox News isn’t wearing this shirt.

And the legacy of slavery, and the endurance of racism! Has he no shame? [...] Let me pull out just a few of the worst distortions. Hannity and Carlson hyped Obama’s “shout-out” to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but amazingly ignored the part of his speech where he said Wright “introduced me to someone named Jesus Christ, and I learned that my sins could be redeemed.” (This from our first Muslim president.) On Fox, Hannity played the Wright “shout-out” side by side with Obama’s later denunciation of Wright, as though the Wright remarks revealed in 2008 were already public when Obama greeted him at the 2007 speech. I shock myself at my ability to be shocked by these frauds, but that was pretty shocking.

The National Memo: Most observers quickly dismissed the stunt as an attempt to create a “47 percent” moment for the president that reveals his disdain for some Americans. Hannity at one point said that then-candidate Obama made derisive comments about “poor people” — when Obama was clearly speaking about the need to provide skills training to neglected groups including the homeless, veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and young adults coming out of foster care. Carlson went on Fox and Friends Wednesday morning to blame the dismissal of the tape on the “throne sniffers” in the mainstream media. Yet by morning even Drudge had dropped the story from his top headline and moved on to the next manufactured outrage.

The Guardian: The Democratic national committee described the conservative attack as “lame”. The bigger question is whether the Romney campaign played any part in the release of the footage. Both campaigns can be guilty of dirty tricks operations, passing on material to sympathetic journalists. But Romney officials denied all knowledge and distanced itself from the video, portraying it as thin.

Steve Benen: I’m not sure whether to be annoyed (by the ugly, racially-charged tactics), insulted (they’re treating Americans like fools), or feel sorry for them.

The “explosive” Hampton Tape “Bombshell,” regurgitated from 2007

Matt Drudge, Sean Hannity, and Tucker Carlson (wearing a big-boy tie now) hyped a video all day yesterday that had been previously reported about in 2007. Bombshell! As a matter of fact, Andrew Sullivan posted a full transcript in June of 2007. What’s the big deal now? Oh, well they want to air a segment where (then) Senator Obama name checks Rev. Wright, which wasn’t on the video in 2007:

“I’ve got to give a special shout-out to my pastor. The guy who puts up with me. Counsels me. Listens to my wife complain about me. He’s a friend. And a great leader,” the president said of Wright in an address to the Hampton University Annual Ministers’ Conference in Hampton, Va., in June 2007 in video posted by The Daily Caller and first aired on Fox News.

For the rightwing extremist, that’s all she wrote. Why? I don’t know. I’m not a rightwing extremist. But Obama goes on to say — and I think this is interesting:

“Down in New Orleans, where they still have not rebuilt 20 months later, there’s a law, federal law — when you get reconstruction money from the federal government — called the Stafford Act. And basically it says, when you get federal money, you’ve got to give a 10 percent match. The local government’s got to come up with 10 percent. Every 10 dollars the federal government comes up with, local government’s got to give a dollar.

“Now here’s the thing, when 9/11 happened in New York City, they waived the Stafford Act — said, ‘This is too serious a problem. We can’t expect New York City to rebuild on its own. Forget that dollar you got to put in. Well, here’s 10 dollars.’ And that was the right thing to do. When Hurricane Andrew struck in Florida, people said, ‘Look at this devastation. We don’t expect you to come up with y’own money, here. Here’s the money to rebuild. We’re not going to wait for you to scratch it together — because you’re part of the American family.’ … What’s happening down in New Orleans? Where’s your dollar? Where’s your Stafford Act money? Makes no sense. Tells me that somehow, the people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much.”

BLACK PEOPLE ARE THE REAL RACISTS! I guess? ABC News reports “Carlson told Fox Tuesday night the clips were evidence the then-candidate was ‘whipping up race hatred and fear. Period.‘” Really! Obama also adds:

“People ask me whether I thought race was the reason the response was so slow. I said, ‘No. This administration was colorblind in its incompetence.’ But everyone here knows the disaster and the poverty happened long before that hurricane hit. All the hurricane did was make bare what we ignore each and every day, which is that there are whole sets of communities that are impoverished, that don’t have meaningful opportunity, that don’t have hope and they are forgotten. This disaster was a powerful metaphor for what’s gone on for generations.”

Whatever. First of all, this is so blatant an attempt to try and change the subject from Romney’s hidden camera remarks on the 47 percent that it reeks of flop sweat. Secondly the entire time Drudge was barking on the midway yesterday, preparing to release the flying monkeys, he was also linking to a page to contribute to Mitt Romney’s campaign. Certainly no collusion between Romney, Drudge, Hannity and Carlson over this latest bit of desperation, I’m sure.

Finally, and most importantly, look (or listen) to what Obama said — it’s an interesting observation: why WASN’T the Stafford Act waived for New Orleans after Katrina like it had been for other monumental disasters?  Do you agree that simply mentioning that fact is racist?

The reason Romney doesn’t have to show the country his papers isn’t because everyone knows he was born in Michigan. It’s because whiteness remains unquestionably “American” for some people in a way blackness does not. That should not be a point of pride for Romney; it should be a matter of anger and disappointment.”

Now, I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.

The crowd, predictably, went nuts.

If this doesn’t reek of desperation and flop sweat, I don’t know what does. Either Gawker’s The Bain Files are that upsetting — or is this a promise of things to come at the RNC rollout of Mitt Romney 2.012: Warmer and Fuzzier.

THIS is all he’s got to excite his ‘base.’

Metromix Des Moines reports: “Country legend Hank Williams Jr. played to a crowd of nearly 8,500 at the Iowa State Fair Grandstand Friday night. [...] Following the song “We Don’t Apologize For America” a chant of “USA, USA” broke out amongst the crowd. Williams smiled, telling the crowd that he was their mouth piece and adding: “We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the US and we hate him!” The cheers that followed were loud and enthusiastic.”

How these people survive each day without falling from the toilet and sustaining fatal injury is anyone’s guess. All of them decided to ignore actual events which occurred in their state — at their fair — last week:

1) The President stopped by the Iowa State Fair and then toured drought-stricken crops with Iowa farmers. Last week it was reported that the Obama Administration, via the USDA, will buy up to $170 million worth of pork, lamb, chicken and catfish to help drought-stricken farmers. But Obama hates farmers! and ‘merica! and baby Jesus!

2) Conversely Paul Ryan, the Republican VP candidate, also visited the Iowa State Fair to give a stump speech. Afterwards, reporters asked him about the drought and dead crops and whether he supported federal aid to farmers. Ryan’s reply was: “We’ll get into all those policy things later,” adding, rather unbelievably, “Right now I just want to enjoy the fair.” Please note that drought-stricken crops and the farmers who are suffering are not as important to Master Ryan as his fair-going. Also it’s highly likely that he and Mittens, in fact, would not support such federal aid (that would take away from those tax cuts for the wealthy!). But Paul Ryan is the real ‘merican though, ain’t he Hank?!

Be sure to show up in November and vote against anyone who these idiots support.

Rep. Joe Walsh wants to “pat [Pres. Obama] on the head” and call him “son”

“There’s something different on the ground, and I think it’s going to overtake us all again, think it’s going to overtake the political class, I think it’s going to respectfully pick this president up and pat him on the head and say, son, son, son, Mr. President, you were never ready to be president, now go home and work for somebody and find out how the real world works.” — Rep. This past Fourth of July, Joe Walsh also said that Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran who lost both her legs in Iraq, wasn’t a “true hero.”

This is the type of person who the tea party worships. The country would be a better place if this guy was voted out of Congress.

News from Rightwing Nutjob Birtherstan (or what craziness are those billionaires financing now?)

A shadowy super PAC called the Conservative Majority Fund has begun an ad campaign which they claim will disqualify President Obama from running for re-election, according to Think Progress:

“As the ad’s announcer reads his script, a chryon runs at the bottom asking questions such as “What is [Obama's] connection to Bill Ayers?” “What is his current relationship with Rev. Wright?” and “Who paid for his Harvard Education?” The Conservative Majority fund’s website also appears entirely devoted to promoting far right myths, including a campaign to keep the United Nations from seizing people’s guns, an attack on the Obama Administration’s supposed “deep and dirty involvement in the the Fast & Furious gun-running scandal,” and multiple pages devoted to fighting the nearly non-existent problem of voter fraud. Their birther petition calling for Congress to “investigate Barack Obama’s forged birth certificate” prominently features anti-immigrant Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

“The Conservative Majority Fund only filed its initial papers with the Federal Elections Commission a month ago, and has not yet disclosed the extent of its spending on this ad. Their spending is significant enough, however, that the ad ran simultaneously on both CNN and Fox News this morning, and it is twice the length of a normal campaign ad.”

Certainly if could be any (or all) of the few billionaires who have stated they will be shoveling money into Romney’s campaign indirectly through Super PACs. Foster Friess said he’s going to donate “undercover” so it’s “not so high profile.” Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson is throwing money around like it grows on trees (which for him, it might). Adelson has said his political contributions will be “limitless” to get Mitt Romney elected. These billionaires are simply investing in their future.

Seems to me that if anyone involved with the Conservative Majority Fund actually believed in any of the ridiculous conspiracies and far-right myths they’re putting out on President Obama, they wouldn’t be hiding in the shadows. But that’s the point: they don’t believe a word of it. That’s why you can’t find out who’s actually funding and creating this thing. It’s simply racist dog whistling disguised as ‘very serious’ campaign information, paid for by the wealthiest one percenters who want more tax cuts.

And that’s your modern Republican Party. When poor and working class racists and the wealthy elite have one thing in common: the enemy of their enemy is their friend.
